
2013.12.18. Holiday Happy Hour & Reception for Early Admits from the Class of 2018!

Before people started leaving Beijing for the holidays, we gathered for our Holiday Happy Hour. We also used this occasion to welcome the new early admits - announcements went out yesterday - to the great Class of 2018. We enjoyed nice conversations along with hot toddies, mulled wine, buttered rum, and holiday treats such as ginger bread cookies.

2013.12.7. Jenny Hsi '10 & Nine Gates Polyphony Christmas Concert

We joined the Nine Gates Polyphony for an evening of traditional Christmas music, from masterworks of the Renaissance to timeless folk tunes sung throughout the ages. Featuring the choral works of Praetorius, Byrd, Mouton, and Lauridsen and guest artists on instrumental pieces, they transported us with the wonder, mystery, and joy of the Advent season.

To kick off this year's Thanksgiving season, we joined the other Ivies for some festive drinks and snacks. The joint event was hugely successful with around 60 people showing up throughout the evening.

2013.11.26. Power Fitness for the Philippines

After Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, PAABJ and a few other organizations came together to provide assistance to the estimated 4 million people who had been displaced. Working in collaboration with the United Nation's World Food Programme (UNWFP), we helped promote an 5-hour power fitness session for the Philippines. P for P started with family-friendly yoga and went on with yoga, heyrobics, pilates and zumba classes all being taught. Between each session there were on-the-ground updates from the UNWFP, silent auctions to raise money for the Philippines as well as a chance to grab drinks.

It was a great honor to be able to welcome President Christopher Eisgruber ’83 to Beijing in November 2013. More than 150 alumni and friends from across China joined us for this remarkable occasion. It has been great to see the renewed emphasis President Eisgruber has put on the international community at large and China in particular.

2013.10.26. 3rd Annual Oktobeerfest

For three years consecutively we have co-hosted our Oktobeerfest trivia contest along with the Harvard and Yale Clubs of Beijing. For two years we have also been the undeniable victors in this event, a feat which we expect to repeat in the future. As in the past two years, Yan Zhang '03 has generously offered to be the quizmaster for this event.

2013.10.19. Via Ferrata Outing

We have put together an outing out to visit the Via Ferrata just outside of Beijing. Via Ferrata is similar to rock climbing except you have fixed hand and footholds bolted into the rock face. A young Beijing couple, together with a number of French enthusiasts, put together this excellent facility about an hour and a half from downtown Beijing.

2013.10.18. All-Ivy Golf Tournament

In partnership with the other Ivy League schools' alumni associations, PAABJ hosted a golf tournament at Orient Beijing. Prizes (10 vouchers for golf lessons, each worth RMB 3000) and the school's honor were on the line.

It was a great honor for us to welcome Andrea Pasinetti '08, Founder & CEO of Teach for China, to give a talk to PAABJ. Andrea talked about his study experience at the Woodrow Wilson School, where he focused on education in Chinese rural reform policies and the New Socialist Countryside Campaign. He also shared with us his experience traveling to seven provinces in an effort to understand the contours of educational inequity in China, and how he founded Teach For China to bring quality educational resources to all Chinese children.

PAABJ proudly invited alumni and friends to a viewing of the 2013 movie "The Great Gatsby" and a '20s themed costume house party. To fully enjoy the 3D effect, we decided to see the movie at UME Shuangjing Cineplex. Afterwards, we headed over to the house party with space kindly provided by PAABJ's former President Yan Zhang '03.

2013.8.20. Dinner Discussion with Christie's China CEO Cai Jinqing '93 - "The Rising of the Art Market in China"

It was a great honor to welcome Cai Jinqing *93 to speak at an intimate dinner discussion with PAABJ. Ms Cai, who is originally from Beijing, recently took over the leadership of Christie's, the first and only foreign auction house to be granted a license to operate on Mainland China.

Vanessa made headlines in 2010 when she became the youngest European woman to summit Mount Everest. During her time in the Himalayas and beyond, Vanessa was captivated by the medical challenges and has since been involved in healthcare both in China and in the US. At this informal dinner, Vanessa talked more about her Everest experiences as well as her thoughts on healthcare in the region.

PAABJ and the Harvard Club of Beijing organised this workshop for students in Beijing during the summer who are interested in kickstarting their careers in China. We had over 20 young panelists from a range of industries including Banking, Consulting, Education, Entrepreneurship, Green Tech, Government, Law, Media, NGOs/Policy, Tech/Start-Ups and Venture Capital/Private Equity. Panelists offered students advice on how they made the transition to China, the advantages of working in China, the drawbacks of working in China and more.

We were excited to host our month's happy hour at the new Great Leap Brewing (GLB). As well as being able to casually enjoy a selection of beers, GLB's founder Carl Setzer (recently featured in City Weekend) also gave us the opportunity to give us a private tasting of 6 of their most popular beers as well as a tour of their new venue.

We were honored to welcome Brett Rierson, the director of the UN's World Food Programme’s (WFP) China Liaison Office, to come and speak to us . Brett is responsible for WFP’s relations with the Chinese government, private sector and high net worth donors. His primary focus is to take China’s unprecedented success in reducing hunger at home, and make it China’s greatest export.

2013.6.15. Community Service at Bai Nian Vocational School

In the wake of International Children's Day, PAABJ decided to host a community service event at BN Vocational School, China's first charitable vocational secondary school. The school has pre-established weekend tutoring sessions, which are sponsored by the US State Department as part of its English Access Program. PAABJ will participated in BNVS' well-developed English-teaching volunteer program.

2013.5.18. Hike to Miyun Water Reservoir with Yale and Oxbridge

We joined fellow alums from Yale Club of Beijing and Oxford and Cambridge Clubs of Beijing on for a day-hike to the source of Beijing's water - the Miyun Reservoir. The hike was led by Chinese speaking experts from environmental education NGO Nature University and volunteer translators, who introduced to us the Reservoir and its environs, followed by a hike to the nearby mountains.

2013.5.9. Dinner Talk with Bill Bikales '76 - "Which is 'Inner' and which is 'Outer'? The View From Ulaanbaatar"

We were very honored that Bill Bikales '76 offered to speak to PAABJ at a dinner about his views and experiences on living and working in Mongolia. After serving as Economic Advisor to five different Prime Ministers, he left Ulaanbaatar in 2001 with a changed worldview, one that his recent 7 years of work in Beijing for UNDP and UNICEF have not altered.

Jeremy Adelman (Walter Samuel Carpenter III Professor in Spanish Civilization and Culture; Professor of History; Director, Council for International Teaching and Research; Chair, Fund for Canadian Studies) and Diana Davies (Vice Provost for International Initiatives) traveled to China for the Princeton-Fung Global Forum in Shanghai. PAABJ gave them a warm reception in Beijing.
